Earthquake inJapa n during 1995. This motive is to evaluate the
weak story in a building.The wea k story is caused by that the
each ultimate story shear forces inthe building are not
uniformly designed to resist the earthquake.The main contents of
this thesis are as follows :1.Comparing the building design
codes between Japan and Taiwan Japan : After 1981, a new
building design code has been widely adopt ed for its
strong endurance during an earthquake. Taiwan : In 1997, it
also announces a new "building design code" to check
if there exi sts a weak story in a building .2.Comparing the
study cases by linear static a nalysis In this thesis,
the ETABS 6.10 is used to analysis the building structure
for R.C. rigid frame without shear wall by linear static
analys is. The Taiwan new code number 2.14 is the method to
check if there exists t he weak story in a building. The
criteria of weak story is that the ratio Rv2 is less than 80%
.Rv2 is the ratio of the (Vp/Ve)i of some story to the (V p/Ve)
i+1 the abovestory , where Vp is the ultimate story shear force
and Ve is the designseismic force . There are four
categories to find what parameter will be the main factorto
make the weak story in the building . The four cate gories are
as follows:standard category , story height category, beam span
cat egory and columndiscontinuity category. The study result of
this thesis is tha t the columndiscontinuity is the main factor
to make the weak story in the bui lding .Keywords : weak story
