The coefficient of spring can usually be derived from subgrade reaction coefficient. According to previous studies, the assessment of subgrade reaction coefficients is mainly suitable to single-layer soil only. This study will establish a theory of assessment of the subgrade reaction coefficient by using the relation between loading and settlement for single-layer soil. Then, this theory will be ex The results show that, subgrade reaction coefficient of single-layer soil obtained from this study is in general close to those of previous researches. Results show also that the subgrade reaction coefficients in Taipei basin lie between to which can be categorized as soft soil. It is found also that the influence of soil thickness to subgrade reaction coefficient is decreasing as the elastic modulus and soil thickness increase. Compared to the soil properties,structure stiffness and loading status, the thickness of soil is not a major factor. The depth and location of the gravel and the homogeneity and distribution of soil profile are the key factors.
