Their specialized design services have been critical for improving the image and competitiveness of Taiwan industry. Many surveys have concluded that the large commercial design companies often partner unsuccessfully, split up, or go out of business because of poor management although their returns of investment are higher than mall and medium-sized one. Thus, setting up a large commercial design company in Taiwan is very difficult. In order to understand the management of Taiwan''s commercial design companies, this study uses the case study method to explore Taiwan''s three top-ranked commercial design companies in 1997. Using in-depth interviews to their executives, the study aims to understand how they run large commercial design companies. The study focuses on seven main issues, including the use of design resources, management philosophy, management plans and goals, the formulation and use of strategic plans, communication with and supervision of personnel, operation management, and the resolution of managerial problems. The main findings of the study include the following:1) The partnering of large commercial design companies shows no particular trends in development. In terms of management, commercial design companies should place more of a focus on the appropriate use of funds and on the supplementary skills of their partners. These should be exploited fully so they can become an effective resource for use in the management of large commercial design companies.2) Human resource organization is normally hierarchical or consists of gradual increases or reductions of personnel, which is appropriate for maintaining a natural turnover rate. Highly skilled managers and professionals are also critical, however. A reasonable distribution of work among designers and the provision of good compensation and benefits would be helpful in reducing the turnover rate of designers.3) Having many long-term domestic and international partners, suppliers, and professional consultants would provide an important resource for improving design techniques, quality, efficiency, service, and business development of large commercial design companies.4) Large commercial design companies should have multiple flexible management strategies to reflect the ever-changing nature of the marketplace. Specialization, internationalization, and diversification are especially popular strategies used by large commercial design companies.5) Human resource management of large commercial design companies is based on both systematization and individual needs. It is most appropriate to choose a management method which poses the fewest obstacles and provides the best results.6) Management philosophy is a decisive factor in establishing the foundation of management and creating value in large commercial design companies. In addition, a close relationship exists between the presence of effective management methods and the professional acumen and values of managing executives. 7) large commercial design companies in Taiwan have a core of three parts to their management practices: "management philosophy," "people," "design resources." These are the most important factors affecting overall management of large design companies. 8) The management of Taiwan''s large commercial design companies has matured gradually. Through the influence of foreign investment and internationalization, some large commercial design companies have developed professional, international standards. It would be worthwhile for Taiwan''s other commercial design companies to follow the example of these firms in their development. chang wen-chih 張文智 1998 學位論文 ; thesis 0 zh-TW
