measurement of the left ventricular assist impeller pump developed by the Medi
cal School of National Taiwan University. To explore the effect of pump housin
g design on the flow field, eight different types of pump housing were designe
d. The measurements include the pressure difference between the inlet and outl
et of pump, pump efficiency of various flow rates at constant impeller rotatin
g speed. An optimum design of pump housing can therefore be chosen to increase
the pump efficiency, and to decrease the circulation zones that might cause t
he formation of thrombosis. We found that the pump housing labeledtype-G with
the inlet perpendicular to the housing and distanced 8mm between inlet and imp
eller, possesses the smallest circulation zone, that is, the highest pump effi
ciency among the eight different designs.
