This system consists of three parts. The first part is Mechanical Component Data Program(MCDP). It uses the theory that one component owns more than one functions to establish the components' data. The second part is Function-Tree Developer(FTD). The designer could decompose function by the help of improved function decomposition process. This process uses tree to decompose function, and the relationship between different functions could be expressed clearly. The third part is Solution Search Engine(SSE). The function tree is transformed into binary tree and the function structure could be searched from the binary tree. The components that match the functions were searched from the MCDB. Finally, a function-component matrix is proposed to find the optimum s olution of the components. The system presented is illustrated with examples.
