碩士 === 國立臺灣大學 === 電機工程學系研究所 === 86 === The subject of this thesis lies in examining the physical modeling of
plucked strings, which is one of the promising methods of sound synthesis.
Based on modeling the mechanism of production of sound, physical modeling
provides not only a way of realizing the vibration and acoustic phenomena
of musical instruments, but the digital sound of the best auditory quality.
This thesis focuses on two methods of physical modeling: Karplus-Strong
plucked-string algorithms and the digital waveguide.Karplus-Strong plucked-
string algorithms can be regarded as the cascade combination of a delayline
and a lowpass filter. The initial values are random numbers and can start a
note with a lot of high harmonics.Based on the concept of travelling wave,
digital waveguide avoid the huge computation burden when dealing with the
wave equation by numerical integration. As long as provided proper initial
and boundary conditions, this technique is able to simulate the sound of
plucked strings in no time.
