The construct of performance assessment in this study is "experimental design, implementationand result inference". Two tasks were used: "cart" and "paper towel". Authenticity was discussed by construct representation. Methods adopted were factor analysis, repeated measure, and generalizability. Whereas directness was discussed by irrelevant confounding variables, such as anxiety, prior knowledge, pre-concept, reading ability and situation comprehension. Methods adopted were three-way ANOVA,and response pattern diagram. Both tasks were administered to 40 sixth graders in fall semester of 1997. Results indicated that : 1.The structure of students'' ability somehow similar to the construct structure. 2.Students'' performance can be generalized cross occasions and raters within the same task, but not between tasks. 3.Construct-irrelevant variables interfere students'' performance. 4.Crossing the status of pre-concept and situation comprehension, various response patterns were found.
