We calculated the propagation constants and the distributions of the guided modes of four devices (3-layer step index waveguide, 3-layer graded index waveguide, 5-layer index waveguide, coupler,and polarizer). By comparing the calculated results and those known data, we can know that this proposed method is an effective, easy method for dealing with slab waveguide structure problems.
