The current English tea-chings implemented under the same teaching schedule, the same teaching materi-als and the same evaluation. As a result, some students become the victims under this teaching system because of the differences of aptitudes, potentia-lities, interests, and learning ways. A great number of students whose intelligence are above average and whose academic performances in Chinese and math are great fail to pass English examination. Gradually those students lose confidence in learning English and the studying careers in other subjects are also seriously jeopardized. This study is about an English IEP as a remedial teaching method for 18 English underacievers in English resource room of PeitouJunior High School. The experiment of our English IEP as a remedial teaching method for one semester, including the re- editing teaching materials of English Text Book I and CTS forstudents'' self-evaluation, was carried out according to every student''s starting behavior under six teaching steps--diagnosis, planningof immidiate instructional progress, group teaching, evaluation, going back to the mainstream and following-up.We found that 78% of the students were allowed to go back to the mainstream(the regular class). In other words, they eventually overcame the learning difficulties. From the investigation and interview, theyhade confidence in learning English again and they could develop correct and positive attitude in learning English. This study is contributive in EFL teaching and in IEP.In terms of contributions in EFL teaching:(1)The knowledge of spelling is heavily tied with the learning process of vocabulary. Most of remedial teaching starts from the beginning of the recognition of phonetic symbols.(2) The potentiality of English underachievers can be highly motivatedif proper teaching methodology is adopted. (3) Computer might play a crucialrole in English teaching if it is well-designed. In terms of the contrubutionsin the applocation of IEP:(1) IEP as a remedial teaching method is a humanisticstyle of teaching a foreign language.(2) Functions of IEP can be asserted intopractical teaching for normal students, not just for the students in specialeducation. (3) IEP can be applied to EFL teaching, just like other fields of special education. RAUNG-FU CHUNG 鍾榮富 1998 學位論文 ; thesis 215 zh-TW
