Meanwhile, the preparation of the ligands; 5-alkyl-1,3-bis[5' -(3'', 4''-dialkoxyphenyl)-1', 3', 5'-trioxopentanoxyl] benzenes (20) 及 [3'-(3'', 5''-dialkoxybenzene)-5'-methyl)pyrazol-1'-yl]ethyl ethers (26) is also reported. All the ligands were characterized by 1H- and 13C- NMR spectroscopy, and metal complexes were characterized by element analysis and IR data. In this thesis we will examine the mesomorphic properties, and also study the structure of mesophases of copper(II) , nickel(II), cobalt(II), and vanadyl(IV) complexes derived from N,N'-bis[3-(3',4'-dialkoxyphenyl) -3-oxopro- penyl]ethylene-diamines. Data showed that nickel(II), cobalt(II) and vanadyl(IV) complexes exhibited columnar liquid crystalline phases, however, all copper complexes formed only crystalline phase. The mesomorphic properties were characterized by DSC analysis, optical polarized microscope, and the structure of mesophases was confirmed as columnar hexagonal arrangement by power XRD diffraction. The effect on the formation of mesophase by incorporation with various metal centers will be studied as well in this thesis. In additions, the formation of mesophases on the numbers of side chains and the length of the carbon chains will be investigated in detail. However, two other types of ligands; 5-alkyl-1,3-bis[5'-(3'', 4''- dialkoxyphenyl)-1', 3', 5'-trioxopentanoxyl]benzenes (20) [3'-(3'', 5''-dialkoxybenzene)-5'-methyl)pyrazol-1'- yl]ethyl ethers (26) were also prepared and reporte, and their complexes with transition metal are in process in our laboratory.
