summer is much and long, and consequently the holes appear on
the ground. Since long time ago, it costs much manpower and
material resource to maintain the freeway every year. This
research focused on the section (from Hsin-Chu to Tou-feng)of
the freeway to study the decrease of strength because of
water. In the research, drilling is executed at the shoulder
of the No.1 Freeway beginning form 103K to 109K, then the
performance tests with resilient modulus test,indirect tensile
strength test and AECS are used.In AECS test, the decreasing
rate of resilient modulus soaking in water in three days about
1 to 10%, and soaking in water in seven days is about -2 to
23%. The later !is more obvious than the front . The decreasing
rate of the test is about 30%.We can obtain the decreasing
condition and the relation between saturation and bearing
force on embankment from CBR and resilient modulus test. It
shows that soaking in water affects the bearing force , the
decreasing rate obtained from CBR test is 40.5%. Using BASIR
program to execute the sensitive analysis on embankment , the
compressive strain increasing on the base ground is larger
than Bituminous Treated Base , after soaking in water, and it is
the critical condition of destruction.
