Ideally, this method can be adopted as a design tool for improving chemical processes in terms of both cost and waste reduction.   The design of WUNs is traditionally carried out with the aid of Pinch technology. Specifically, the minimum process water consumption rate or wastewater treatment rate is first determined according to the composite curves and the network structure is then obtained manually based on experience.   In this work, the minimun process water consumption rate or wastewater treatment rate is determined directly with a mathematical programming model instead. The optimal network structure is also included in its solution. This app roach is therefore evidently more efficient and more reliable. In addition,lower -cost WUNs can sometimes be identified with the proposed techniques. We have also tried to develop models for integrating pocess water network 、utility water network and wastewater treatment network in the same plant. The results are quite encouraging, i. e. the fresh water demand can be further reduced to a very low level.   Finally, the above methods have actually been applied to two petrochemical plants located in southern Taiwan. The preliminary results are impressive. In particular, a significant saving of 52%in water consumption has been identified.
