The controller is designed according to the linear quadratic Gaussian (LQG) control theory, and piezoelectric materials are used as sensors and actuators. The controller is then implemented in experiments to verify the validity of the theory. The equations of motion and sensor equations being used are those developed in reference [15] for delaminated composite beams with piezoelectric sensors and actuators. Firstly, they are transformed into a state-space form using modal coordinates as its states. Then the LQG theory is employed to design two kinds of the digital controller. The first kind of the controller consists of a state feedback control law and a prediction-type Kalman filter, while for the second an additional feedfoward control law is added. In order to find a suitable controller, computer simulations for control systems are performed. The desired digital controller is then implemented by a personal computer and the tests are carried out. The experiment setup and test procedures are explained and the influence of design parameters on control is evaluated.
