Two new methods for measuring the surface softness of tissue paper were examined in this study. One of them, dubbed CK method to determine the surface softness of embossed or creped tissue papers by testing the adhesion between the glued area of paper specimen and removable self-stick label paper. The testing results of this new method were compared favorably with those of artificial finger tip method and the subjective handfeel method. The CK method is a simple method to measure paper surface softness. Some problems involved in the practical application of this method are also discussed. Practicall The other method dubbed sled method. This method uses a sled which bottom is fabricated with a special rubber mass driven by motor to apply a horizontal force (simulating the movement of finger tip over the specimen) on the surface of test paper at fixed speed. The sliding force (gf) is measured and regarded as an indication of the surface softness of the test specimen. The sled test results of commonly used embossed tissue papers in Taiwan suggest that the sled method provides good correlation with the h A sled method is proposed to accurately assess the changes in softness on both sides of various embossed tissue papers. The method offers a means of controlling and improving quality of tissue paper for mill operators. Softness, absorbency and compressive resistance are the attributes of perceptions associated with "textile materials" and properties that make tissue paper different from other types of papers. Creping is a vital process that embodies these characteristics to tissue paper. Selecting the optimal creping conditions become the most important task in the manufacturing of tissue paper. The pressure of the touch roll, creping ratio and conditions of the creping blade are important factors affecting creping of t By adding 2 % of cationic calcium carbonate in stock , it not only improved the surface softness of creped tissue paper measured with sled method but reduced the COD in effluents.
