Due to the advances in high speed electronics technologies, the bandwidth of the network has been significantly broadened in recent years. As a result, multimedia communication has become one of the major streams in telecommunication. Among all the multimedia data, holographic image is one of the most attractive ones because hologram contains a complete 3-D information of an image. It is likely that hologram will be one of the major stream in multimedia communication in the future However, the transmission of hologram is still a major problem at present time due to the large amount of data contained in a hologram.
Classical holograms are most commonly created by recording the complex diffraction pattern of laser light reflected from a physical object These holograms can be used to reconstrucy images of sub-micron detail with superb quality. The characteristics of hologram is different from ordinary 2-D image. For example, hologram is much more sensitive to distortion and data error than ordinary 2-D image Therefore, classical image compression techniques might not be suitable to holographic image. The characteristics of hologram has to be analyzed in order to find a suitable compression technique that can be used for the transmission of holographic image.
In this paper, the characterisitcs of holographic image has been analyzed. The hologram used in this paper is generated by computer using high frequency Geometrical Theory of Diffraction. Form the characteristics of hologram, it was found that the transmission of hologram can easily be accomplished by the transmission of the characteristics of hologram. The number of information that needs to be transmitted from the sender to the receiver has been significantly reduced using this scheme.
