With the development of technology, medical record combined with text formatwith data types of multimedia, such as image, digital signal etc. Formodern hospitals, it has been an important problem to manipulate thesehuge amount of medical record efficiently. One way to solve this problemis to manage these huge amount of medical record by estiblishing databasesystems in hospital information system (HIS). During the development ofdatabase system, The architecture of relational database has been widelyused in many database systems for it''s data independency and ease of query.With the mention above, the main purpose of this study was to build a relational database for the need of medical field. For the designing of database system architecture, three stages which arelogical design, conceptual design, and physical design were divided to achieve. In each stage, data model was used to find the relationships between medical data. In order to manage medical information more efficiently,medical information was stored into individual databses by storingdepartmental data and common data into departmental databases and a commondatabase, respectively. For data integrity planing, we use Setting defaultvalues, building primary keys, foreign keys, and triggers were usered for data integity planing. Processing rules for registration, visitiing, andadmission has been provided for client users to promote data accessingefficiency. User group was supported to manage different users'' privilegesfor the data security. Because medical record in departmental database wasstored individually and bit-marker was used to record corresponding studyitems, this database system was capable of expandability in adding newdepartments and study items. This system, currently, was constructed with Sybase SQL server 11 installedin a personal computer. Applications can access related data from client todatabase server by standered SQL, Transact-SQL, or stored procedures. The primary results showed that it took less than 1 ms by using data cacheand 16 ms without using data cache for searching data from a database with12,000 medical records. According to different running processing rules, system took from 14 ms to 22 ms in time for data accessing. We confirmed thatthis database system has high performance in data accessing by these resultsabove. Besides results of the data consistency, security, and expandabilityreach to expected ones. It is a large and complex topic for designing medical database. In thisstudy, we has proposed a proper managing architecture for medical record.
