However, there must be some protective factors in the suicide process, which counteract the risk factors to prevent individualfrom suicide. The purpose of this study was to find the beliefs protacting the undergraduates from suicide, and to develop an indigenous inventory - the Reasons for Staying Alive Inventory. Six hundred and sisty five undergraduates recruited from fiveuniversities were asked to fill in the Reasons for Staying AliveInventory. Throught factor analysis, four factors were extracted as follow: Positive Expectancy toward Future, Fear of Social Disapproval, Affection to Relatives and Friends, and Support ofReligious. Internalk consistency reliability of the RSAI was0.95( 0.84 to 0.96 in subscales), and its test-retest reliability was 0.77( 0.72 to 0.81 in subscales). The RSAI correlated significantly with Beck DepressionInventory, Marlowe-Crowne Social Desirability Scale, and thesubjects at differentg suicide processes responded differently in theRSAI. Most of the results were consistent with our hypothesis. In application, the " Reasons for Staying Alive" could be used as a reference structure in clinical treatment of suicide attempt. Toidentify the particular reasons for staying alive which the clientsput the emphasis on, and to enhance the accessibility of thesereasons will maximize the protective effect.
