A sampling unit is consi sting of a sample tube packed with Carbopack B as adsorbent . By using the the rmal desorption technique in conjunction with gas chromatography/mass spectrom etry, the qualitative and quantitative analyses of volatile organic compounds is studied. USEPA TO-17 method was applied throughout this study. The optimum analytical parameters were the established. The desorption efficiencies of t arget compounds were all above 97 %. The coefficient of variance (CV%) result of 7 replicated standard gas samples is less than 10%. The glass bottle contai ning activated charcoal and desiccant agent was applied for sample storage and two weeks period of time can be extended. The safe sampling volume of 16 L wa s determined field test. Result shows that toluene is the most abundant spic es of VOCs investigated outdoor concentration of 141.4 ug/m3 in Taichung city . The average concentration of benzene, the confirmed human carcinogen, is 3 9.4 ug/m3 . The highest concentration of VOCs was found around area of Chung C heng Road which is classified as business section. The variation trend of VOCs concentration in the course of this investigation exhibited a binominal patte rn in daily base. It showed that concentration at daytime was higher than that in the evening and the concentration on holidays were higher than that on wor king days. For indoor air investigation, the concentration of toluene was al so found to be the highest at averaging value of 123.7 ug/m3 . The concentrat ion of benzene was 18.9 ug/m3. The outdoor concentration of VOCs is higher tha n that indoor air. The correlation between factors in terms of concentration VOCs, number of motor vehicle passing by, Pollutant standard index (PSI) read ings as well as climate conditions (i.e. temperature, humidity, wind direction , wind speed, barometer etc.) was investigated. Among these factor, the number of motor vehicles correlated well with concentration of VOCs. The concentrati on of benzene in the environment where people are confined is used to evaluate the cancer risk which is 7.9 ×10-7 .Key words :Volatile Organic Compounds,T hermal Desorption /GC MS,Risk Assessment Wang,Wen-Hsin 王文忻 1998 學位論文 ; thesis 123 zh-TW
