The purpose of this study was to explore the discharge needs of the family caregivers of hospitalized disabled elders . The dimensions and contents of these discharge needs were explored by using a qualitative study design . Face-to-face interviews with participant observations were used to investigate the subjective experiences and transitional needs of the caregiveies . Fourteen family caregives of 11 disabled elder were interviewed at three different points in the transitions from hospital to home:prior to leaving the hospital, one to two weeks after leaving the hospital, and three to four weeks after leaving the hospital . The analytical method described by Mile and Huberman(1994)was used to analyze the data .
The results indicate that family caregivers have various needs in the transitions from hospital to home:including needs for manpower resources;emotional and spiritual supports, social, economic, and welfare supports;medical related services;and health care related information . Among them, needs for medical related services and health care related information were most often mentioned. Needs for medical related services were needs for hospital administrative assistances, such as helps with admission and discharge procedures;in-hospital medical assistances, such as symptom managements;and after-discharge medical assistances, such as home health care and rehabilitation services. Needs for health care related information included disease-related information, such as disease prognosis;caregiving knowledge and techniques, such as information on diet control and activity restriction;and needs for information on community resources . The results also indicate that family caregivers have different needs at different points in the transitions from hospital to home. For example,in the pre-discharge stage manpower resources and economic supports were needed most . Emotional and spiritual supports were needed most at three to four weeks after the discharge . Medical related services were needed throughout the transition .
The study provides a base for discharge planning and home nursing services by sensitizing nurse;the transitional needs of family caregivers . Therefore, the nursing interventions and discharge preparation can be developed appropriately . The results can also provide a base for future development of a culturally related" caregiving discharge needs assessment tool "to facilitate the clinical, teaching and research aspects of discharge planning services .
