This high-tech industry has rapidly developed itself as the landing industry for the 21 century. This study aims at examining the critical success factors (CSF) of the product and process innovation process of the semiconductor industry in Taiwan. The CSFs of this innovation process is addressed under the aspect of innovation policy, business strategy, organizational characteristics, and environmental factors.   We included all 14-semiconductor companies in Taiwan in our sample, which the interviews were conducted and a follow-up questionnaire was directed for further clarification.   There are three phases in the innovation process:development, growth, and maturity. The results indicate the CSFs in each stage are:   1) Development Stage: The innovation policy is the greatest concern of the companies. Most companies are striking for the excellence of technical capability and abundance of human resources and capital investment.   2) Growth Stage: The perceived CSFs consist of factors from each aspect of the innovation process, in particular, the control of the market share.   3) Maturing Stage: The environment factors are the most important factor. Most companies actively participate in the development of new products and process.   In addition, we compare the CSFs of Taiwan''s companies with those of US counterparts. The comparison indicates that team collaboration, project management control, leading edge technology, as well as strategic alliance are the areas that Taiwan semiconductor industry need to strike for in the global competition. 林杏子 學位論文 ; thesis 182 zh-TW
