The properties of the SMA actuator, compared of a light weight with the traditional actuators, has demonstrated that the SMA actuator could shed a new light on the design artificial multi-fingered hand research. A three-fingered hand prototype is developed, which is controlled by a personal computer cooperated with a CPU-based board. The hand has eight controllable degrees of freedom, and three coupled joints. Modular design scheme makes the structure easy to expand to a five-fingered hand.
