attracted considerable attention trom practical points of view
such as data processing and communication in integrated optical
device. Coupler and switch have long been subjects of interest
in the field of integrated optics. For the conventional
directional coupler, the long coupling length, switching length
(~mm) and high temperature and long time manufacture will lead
to a high cost. With the advantages of the large birefringence
of liquid crystals, we designed a vertical directional coupler,
and switch with short switching length. The operation of the
device was different from the traditional coupled mode theory;
instead, we proposed the method, which the guided mode crossed
the coupling layer directly, to exchange energy. In experiment,
PMMA materials which are easy to prepare, low cost, and can be
fabricated on many kinds of substrates are served as waveguide
on ITO glass or substrate. And the material makes cleaving
easily for the device. Thus end-fire which is helpful for
integrated-optic can be implemented. Beside, inverted-rib
waveguides on and ITO glass substrate are also fabricated,
measured and discussed. To fabricate the liquid crystal switch
with inverted-rib waveguides is implemented. The procedure are
described in detail in this thesis.
