The second serious environmental pollution problem in Taiwan is water pollution. It is thus evident that people in Taiwan noticed the problem of water pollution commonly and sensitively. The Environment Protection Administration is going to carry out enterprise effluent control standard strictly in 1998. One of the control items-suspended solid will descend from lOOmg/L to 30mg/L. The study used In-line direct filtrationprocedure to process artificial wastewater. The filter media of the study were sand and new type plastic filter media. By changing the chemical effect parameter pH、the coagulant dosage and physical effect parameter-filtration、filter bed to probe into if different variables had different effect in filtration improving the quality of water. The chemical coagulation unite decided the removal efficiency of dissolution color material. If the chemical coagulation operation was pH=5, the effect was better than pH=7. When the PAC dosage was lOOmg/L, the ADMI quantity were 200 and 470. The higher the dosage was, the better color removal effect was. However, it had nothing to do with the physical operation condition of filtration unite. As the plastic filter media was filtered in pH=7, it had better filtered capability. If the coagulant PAC dosage was increased,the SS removal efficiency would raise. When the filtration velocity was 200m/d, the effluent SS average water quality descended from 29.4mg/L to 16mg/L. One of many physical and chemical parameters which affected the plastic filter media filtration coefficient, the filtration coefficient pH=7 was better than pH=5. When the chemical coagulation operation condition was pH=7, the PAC dosage was more important to filtration coefficient than the filtration velocity. However, if the chemical coagulation operation condition was pH=5, the filtration velocity was more important than the PAC dosage. Taking the plastic filter media to be filtered directly, the development of head loss was slower than traditional filter media. It lasted 8 hours and used different kinds of physical and chemical operation parameters, the head loss was below 3 cm. the chemical coagulation unit of In-line direct filtration procedure decided the characteristics of filtration influent floc and then affected the behavior of filtration unit. The holes of plastic filter media layer in the combination of two layers filter media could hold back mass of floc. The sand layer could ensure the quality of effluent. The thicker the plastic filter media layer was, the smaller the head loss unite of time was. This could prolong filter run and decreased the frequency of back washing. If the chemical coagulation operation condition-pH was different, the development models of head loss in two layers filter media were different.
