碩士 === 淡江大學 === 國際貿易學系 === 85 === The research develops a theory of international competitiveness thatwill be then applied empirically to Taiwan's Personal Computer and HardDisk Drive Industries.Research into competitiveness is increasingly importance to the fields of strategy. Much of the Work has recognised the role of national systems in fostering industrial competitive advantage. However , at the level of the industry, national system are not equifinal to innovation. In considering the impact of institutional structures on industrial performance, this paper argues that competitiveness depends on the co-evolution of nation and technology systems. But as no nation can be competitive in everything, there are of course other important elements for this explanation. The research thus proposes that countries tend to succeed in industries, where their national systems best apply to the technology system. In applying to empirical settings, it shows that Taiwan succeeds on PCs because its national system is well-fitted to the technology system of the PCs. But for the HDDs, Taiwan fails because of the incompatibility of national and technology systems.
