Summary: | 碩士 === 淡江大學 === 拉丁美洲研究所 === 85 === Urbanization has been an important issue for
the developing countries in twentieth century which have
transformed from traditionally agri-cultural societies to
industrial ones. This is most obvious in Latin
Americancountries. From World War II, those countries in this
region stepped into theaccelerating stage due to the radical
urban growth. Mexico is without excep- tion under such a trend.
Since the practice of the strategy of import substi-tution
industrialization, the industry in Mexico has developed
actively. Mostof the industrial parks are located in large
cities like Mexico city and Mon- terrey which have convenient
transportation and industrial devices, such as better
electricity, drainage. On the other hand, people migrated from
countryto city because of the growing birth rate of country
population and the unsol-ved agricultural problems. Therefore,
the push-pull effect between country and city contributes the
fact that population flows toward the four largest
metropolitan areas. Moreover, Mexican government did not
foresee the problemcoming from urban development, he phenomenon
of over urbanization occurred. Insocial aspect, it caused the
result of the shanty town, the shortage of housesand the
environmental pollution; while in economic aspect, it caused the
un- even development among different states, the dependence on
foreign capital andthe over expansion of informal sector.
Generally speaking, over urbaniztion plays a controlling role
in future development of Mexico. My intention is to
explore the causes, process, present situation of Mexican
urbanization, and to discuss its influence in all aspects.
Furthermore, I will try to es- timate the future development of
Mexican cities. Inferring from the present state, the future
development of Mexican cities is that population no longer
crowds in a few cities owing to the increase of medium-sized
cities, and the policy of populatina dispersion. I believe
the trend described above will bea positive influence on the
future urban development in Mexico.
