Summary: | 碩士 === 淡江大學 === 西洋語文研究所 === 85 === This thesis centers in the approach of the art of language
to discuss Oscar Wilde's The Imoprtance of Being Earnest, Tom
Stoppard's Travesties, and Yu Kuang-chung's <<不可兒戲>>. In
the introduction of the first chapter, it mainly states the
significance of Wilde's witticisms, and the reason why The
Importance of Being Earnest is chosen for discussion instead of
Wilde's other plays. Chapter One is mainly concerned with
Wilde's genius, including the discussion of the definition and
the application of paradox, irony and some comic devices.
Wilde's own evaluation of language will be mentined as well in
this chapter. In Chapter Two, through the comparison between
Wilde's and Stoppard's plays, the thesis discusses some
borrowings and changes which Stoppard adapts from Wilde's as
well as some additions by the latter. Chapter Three tries to
discuss Yu Kuang-chung'g Chinese translation of TheImportance of
Being Earnest, <<不可兒戲>> to look into the possibility of
translating Wilde's witticisms. Chapter Four summarizes the
preceding discussions.
