For naturally deposited sands, the initial relative density is one of the primary factors for volumetric change. This report studies the influence of initial relative density on the consolidation behavior of sands. The relative density of sand specimens were controlled by placing the oven-dried sand into the consolidation chamber. The consolidation tests starts when the sand specimen was saturated. Result shows that : (1) The primary consolidation time and total settlement in- crease with the decrease of consolidation pressure and the increase of relative density ; (2) The speed of dissipation of excess pore pressure in- crease with the increase of consolidation pressure and relative density ; (3) The coefficient of consolidation is about a constant throughout the test ; (4) The e-log p relationship is about a line for all the specimens tested ; (5) In order to have a high initial pore pressure, the de- lay of opening the drainage valve is necessary ; (6) Preparation of the specimens can have a significant effect on the test results.
