碩士 === 東吳大學 === 經濟學系 === 85 === Abstract It''s well known that SME had played a vital role and drew world- wide attention in every stage of Taiwan''s economic growth. However, with the passage of time, the economic environment that SME face has posed a very significant change. For example, the soaring wages pressure has undermined the production cost of SME; in addition, the call for further social welfare expenditure, strong appreciation of currency against US dollar, competition from emerging market like China and South-East Asia , overwhelming protectionism from overseas markets, and the shaping of regional integration of economical units and so forth have transformationaly turned into different threat waiting ahead. Concerns over the mentioned challenges has left a question about whether or not SME will still march forward with stability and remain significant influence on Taiwan''s economic growth as it used to. Based on this motivation, this essay tried to clarify the advantages of SME in Taiwan given the encouraging performance in the past, and further sketch a possible profile of where the SME will be lead to. Based of this subject, this essay will take advantage of the data of historical commercial census in 1981,1986 and 1991 to analyze the competition and try to unveil the myth of SME''s status in the future . Though all dimensions are seriously considered, the highlight finally goes to electronic sector for its fast-growing and marketable influence in Taiwan''s manufacturing industry.
