The soil tested is the remolded Taipei silty clay which is prepared in the modified consolidation cells with three different dimensions. Vane used in this study is in rectangular shape with a height of 76.2 mm and a diameter of 38.1 mm as specified by ASTM. Parameters studied include the development of horizontal and vertical shear resistances with rotation angle, and the influences of rotation rate, vane penetration disturbance, distribution of shear resistance, and stress concentration on the torque measured from the vane shear test. In addition, the vertical and horizontal shear resistances obtained from this study are used to validate the results calculated from an anisotropic shear strength criterion (NTIT-T1 model). Finally, an equation based on the results of this study and the NTIT-T1 model is proposed to estimate the ratio between horizontal and vertical shear resistances of the in-situ soil in terms of torque and rotation angle obtained from the vane shear test.
