Distortion system analysis can not be performed using puresinusoidal voltage formulas in the presence of these distortions. If the harmonic components in the system are neglected, we may get rather differentor even erroneous on results. The purpose of this thesis is to present an approach to compensate reactive powers on a radial distribution system with harmonics. We describe a method combining the function of automated distribution system to do reactive power compensator dispatch in order toreach effective VAR compensation on a distribution system. Meanwhile we alsoconsider the convenience of distribution system management, and describe howto use the least switching operation and least number of switches to complete VAR compensation.
