However, most of the contemporary theories assume the preferred condition for organizations is some sort of steady state, and these theories fail to explain the adaptability of firms in a rapid changing environment. The purpose of this research is to investigate the growth history of the firms in information service industry, and to understand how the firms can adapt to the rapid changing technological environment based on the their knowledge. A case study of eight information service companies is conducted and a three stage model is proposed to describe the growth pattern of these companies. Three kinds of knowledge base of the companies are identified, including information technology, domain knowledge, and process method. The processes of the organizations to acquire, transfer, and sustain these different kinds of knowledge base are used to explain the growth stages of the firms. The result of this research indicates that in the growth processes of information service firms, the role of the firms will change from the providers of information technology to the providers of industry know-how, and the firms will try to transfer the knowledge belongs to individuals to the knowledge belongs to the organization. The findings suggest that organizations will look for a more stable domain to accumulate their knowledge base and so the rapid changing environment will be less influential in their growth processes. Finally, the findings also indicate that it''s hard for the current organizations to adopt the new architecture technologies, so the organizations usually establish a new department to acquire this new architecture technology.
