The air jet with initial momentum becomes bubble plume due to the buoyancy. Different air discharge rates and ambient stratification cases are tested to find their effects on the width variations of the bubble plume along flow axis. Experiments were conducted in a water tank of 67.5cm by 60cm and 60cm high. The bubble plume images were taken by a CCD camera(which is 256(256 resolution). The images were stored in and processed by the personal computer. Results indicate that : (1) In homogeneous ambient fluid, the air jet discharge rate does not affect the growth of bubble plume width significantly.(2) For stratified ambient fluid, the intrusion length of the bubble plume is strongly affected by the air discharge rate.
