The aim of this research is to develop a new sample pretreatment technique for 35 important polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbons, PAHs, in airborne particulate. The efficiency and recovery are compared with those from Soxhiet extraction. Airborne particulates are prepared by spiking standard solution on filter. The standard airborne particulate sample thus obtained were used to establish ASE experimental parameters, and study the effect of matrix on recovery. Another goal of this research aims at the development of a new analytical scheme using isotope dilution GC-Mass spectrometry(IDMS) for analyzing ASE-pretreated samples, the urban dust. Five appropriate deuterated internal standards are used in conjunction with IDMS to determine contents of PAHs in SRM-1649. With this technique, one can determine the contents of PAHs in urban dust with good precision and accuracy. This method is successfully applied to airborne particulate samples collected in Taipei metropolitan area.
