Using participant observation and interview as the two major data collection methods, the researcher spent 9 months in this classroom and participated in various activites. It is found that there are a lot of interactions between boys and girls in this "small" (as compared with typical class in Taipei) and "mix-sex" grouping class. However, making good friends with the opposite sex is rare. Facters contributing to this phenomenon includes: gender segregation, sex differences, being lack of mutual understanding, unpleasant personality and peer ridicule. In spite of these factors, children in this class think it is possible that boys and girls make good friends with peers of the opposite sex. In this class, 62.5% children reported that they had such experiences of loving a peer of the opposite sex secretly. The attractive characters of a "qualified" lover include: excellent academic performance, pleasant personality, appearance and high skills in a specific area. There is only one girl who claimed that she had been in love with a boy of other class. Her ways of handing the loving relationship include writing letters, making phone calls and strolling around with her boyfriend. Others express their love by ways of talking about it among peer groups, writing letters, reading books, and taking ingenious actions. Generally speaking, girls like to talk about, discuss and write about about their love and loved ones; whereas boys tend to read books and take actions to express their love. The researcher offers the following suggestions based on the study: (1)Adult should respect and be concerned with children''''''''s feeling; (2)Adult should treat child of both sexes equally; (3)Teachers can cultivate children''''''''s competence in handing interpersonal problems; (4)Boys and Girls should be taught to treat peers of the opposite appropriately; (5)The curriculum of gender education and teaching material should be enhance; (6)Small class size and mix-sex grouping will increase children''''''''s interpersonal interactions, be them of the same of the opposite sex. 碩士 === 國立師範大學 === 教育學類研究所 === 85 === The researcher applies an ethnographic approach to expolre children''''''''s
perceptions and expressions of friendship and love in an elementary six
grade classroom. Using participant observation and interview as the two
major data collection methods, the researcher spent 9 months in this
classroom and participated in various activites.
It is found that there are a lot of interactions between boys and girls
in this "small" (as compared with typical class in Taipei) and "mix-sex"
grouping class. However, making good friends with the opposite sex is rare.
Facters contributing to this phenomenon includes: gender segregation, sex
differences, being lack of mutual understanding, unpleasant personality and
peer ridicule. In spite of these factors, children in this class think it
is possible that boys and girls make good friends with peers of the opposite
sex. In this class, 62.5% children reported that they had such experiences
of loving a peer of the opposite sex secretly. The attractive characters
of a "qualified" lover include: excellent academic performance, pleasant
personality, appearance and high skills in a specific area. There is only
one girl who claimed that she had been in love with a boy of other class. Her
ways of handing the loving relationship include writing letters, making phone
calls and strolling around with her boyfriend. Others express their love by
ways of talking about it among peer groups, writing letters, reading books,
and taking ingenious actions. Generally speaking, girls like to talk about,
discuss and write about about their love and loved ones; whereas boys tend
to read books and take actions to express their love.
The researcher offers the following suggestions based on the study:
(1)Adult should respect and be concerned with children''''''''s feeling; (2)Adult
should treat child of both sexes equally; (3)Teachers can cultivate children''''''''s
competence in handing interpersonal problems; (4)Boys and Girls should be
taught to treat peers of the opposite appropriately; (5)The curriculum of
gender education and teaching material should be enhance; (6)Small class size
and mix-sex grouping will increase children''''''''s interpersonal interactions, be
them of the same of the opposite sex.
