The success of group corporations can be partially attributed to the efforts of their managerial hierarchy. Thus, it is interested in knowing how and what the managers of group corporation participate in the issues of personal growth, career planning, and education & training. A survey result by American Institute of Director found that 90% of senior managers seldom take part in any training programs that will lead to a limitation on the development of their enterprises. This study attempts to explore the managerial development in Taiwan''s group corporations and work out a development program. Research methods include literature review, case study, questionnaire survey, and in-depth interview. A hundred group corporations in Taiwan are sampled within which 37 group corporations respond. Six human resource managers are interviewed in the case study. Five major issues related to managerial development are discussed: 1) staffing and promotion; 2) performance appraisal; 3) education and training; 4) compensation; 5) planning. Data are analyzed by a discriminant analysis. Based on the theories of managerial development demands and models for individuals and group corporations, leadership and managerial competence, the effectiveness of educational training and development, and data analysis, a managerial development program and method proposes to the group corporations in Taiwan at present. The cause affects performance of group corporations and individuals is very complex; the former will be affected by culture, environment, managers'' talent... etc.; the latter will be affected by leadership, managerial competence, prosperity... etc. It''s not easy to be resolved by single theory or model. This study is based on human resource management theory and tries to provide methods resolving the problems of managerial development in Taiwan''s group corporations.
