Description
Summary:碩士 === 國立高雄師範大學 === 英語教育研究所 === 85 === This study aims to discuss the interpretational relations between the noun phrase and the reflexives in Chinese from pragmatic point of views. The anaphoric interpretation framework is built under the conception of pragmatics. The result indicates that the method raised in this study successfully solves Chinese anaphoric interpretation problems. In addition, contextual information is considered important in identifying the referential relation between an anaphor and a noun phrase. This study suggests that syntactic principles alone can not solve the interpretation of the anaphors in Chinese. In contrase, with the help of contextual information, accurate interpretation of the anaphor and the noun phrase becomes feasible. Furthermore, the theme for interpreting anaphors as suggested in this study is the concept of meaning coherence unit of the anaphor and its relation to the nounphrase at the sentential level. The meaning coherence unit indicating the semantic relation between the anaphor and the noun phrase is assigned by the information in the contextual environment. In the meaning coherence unit, an identifying marker is assigned according to the information given in the contextual environment. By identifying the marker in the meaning coherence unit, interpretation of the anaphor and the noun phrase becomes possible. That is, while the identifying marker in the meaning coherence units of an anaphor and a noun phrase are the same, a referential relation is then built between the two elements. When the identifying markers are not the same, there is not any referential relation constructed. THe results of this study indicate that the anaphors can be successfully and accruately interpreted by identifying the meaning coherence unit of the elements that need to be interpreted. This study can be viewed as a supplement to the theoretical construction of discourse analysis in pragmatics.
