Counseling Experiences on Their Personal Growth

ABSTRACT
The purpose of this thesis was to understand the effects of
counselor trainees'' personal counseling experiences
on their personal growth and professional training,
as well as the relationship between personal growth and
professional training in counseling experiences. A qualitative
research methodology was utilized in which twenty-four graduate
or undergraduate students from three universities''
guidance departments or graduate schools in Taiwan were
interviewed with an interview guide. Based on an
open-coding analysis of the in-depth interviews, the
findings were as follows:
1. The effects of personal counseling experiences on their
personal growth The effects were divided into three main
categories: (a) Positive effects--
Self-awareness(including awareness of cognition,
emotion, behavior, self-concept, and interpersonal
relationship), self-responsibility, spontaneity,
self- assertiveness, self-acceptance, change of
cognition, stability of emotion, and solving of problems
(including clarification of problems and skills of interpersonal
relationship) were found inductively.
(b) Negative effects-- Frustration from counseling
relationship, poor interpersonal relationship,
and negative emotion were included.
(c) No effects-- No change in personal growth.
2. The effects of personal counseling experiences on their
professional training The effects were divided into
two main categories:
(a) Positive effects-- Counseling strategies, counseling
theories, counseling relationship (including
counseling interaction, roles of a counselor, roles
of a client, and counseling ethics), and
identification of counseling profession were included.
(b) Negative effects-- Doubt of a counseling skill''s effect and
difficulties in conducting a skill were found.
3.The relationship between personal growth and professional
training in personal counseling experiences
(a) Self-awareness has an influence on counseling strategies,
counseling theories, and negative effects of professional
training.
(b) Self-assertiveness has an influence on counseling
strategies and counseling interaction.
(c) Self-acceptance has an influence on counseling strategies
and counseling interaction.
(d) Solving of problems has an influence on counseling
strategies and roles of a client.
(e) Others--Positive effects of personal growth have an
influence on identification of counseling
profession and need for supervision. Negative
effects of personal growth have an influence on
counseling strategies and negative effects of professional
training.
The findings and several implications for counselor educators,
counselor trainees, counselors, counselor education
programs, and further researches are discussed.
