Description
Summary:碩士 === 國立中央大學 === 藝術學研究所 === 85 === This dissertation intends to study Zola's art criticism. The focus sets onthe disparity between Zola's conception of art and his art criticism to Manet's works. After textual investation, I found these two matters do not hold the hypothesis of consistency, i.e. the link between Zola's conception and his art criticism to Manet's works exists the disparity. I interpretatethis phenomenon as follows: Zola's conception of art extends from his statement of Naturalism in literature, not entirely from the art works, in other words, Manet's works didn' t maintain Zola's conception of art. This dissertation is divided into four parts. The foreword exposes the motiveof this study and clarifies the scope of the investigation. The critical survey of bibloigraphy on Zola's art criticism in the introduction of original texts of Zola's art criticism are also found in this foreword. Chapter 1 presents the background information of Zola's art criticism, includingthe biographical materials of Emile Zola and the review of Zola's art criticismto Manet's works. Chapter 2 exhibits three categories of Zola's art criticism after examining closely the texts of Zola's art criticism to Manet's works:"A work of art is an individual ""A work of art is a coin of the creation seeingthrough a temperament"," Art aspires for objective and precison". Chapter 3 explains Zola stressed the discription of theme and formal aspects of Manet's works which are deciant from Zola's conception of art when he criticized them.I give a calculation of the ratio of Manet's works appearing on the Zola's artcriticism which shows Zola's conception of art doesn't depend on the works of art. Chpater 3 stands for the conclusion of this dissertation. There are also postscript and appendix in this dissertation. The postscript explains the weakness of this study and future expansion. The appendixincludes chronology of Zola, the translations of selected Zola's art criticism, the pictures of Manet's paintings, and index.
