As computer technology progresses, the development of GISs tends to combine vector and raster functionalities into an integrated system. In order to develop an integrated GIS, the essential component is the creation of an integrated geographic database for saving all types of geographic data. The purpose of this thesis is to design and develop geographic database for such a development. In this study, the requirement for an integrated GIS and the characteristics of vector and raster data were taken into account to design an integrated database with a data model and appropriate data structures for holding vector and raster data. Furthermore, a prototype of the integrated geographic database was implemented using a persistent data programming language. Real geographic data was used to test the capability and the performance of the prototyped geographic database system. The result of the experiment shows that integrated database can display vector and raster data separately or have the superimposition of them in a window; it can also support the database query for the vector、raster or attribute data of a geographic object. The thesis concludes that the proposed integrated geographic database is capable of managing vector、raster and attribute data in a single database system, it may provide a useful core for the further development of an integrated GIS.
