Effects of different influent organic concentrations and hydraulic retention times are investigated to find the optimal operating conditions. The test results of phenol wastewaters indicated that when operated at low phenol loading rates (< 0.87 kg-COD/m3.day), the anaerobic-aerobic RBC process is the best choice, and then anaerobic RBC, aerobic RBC and two- phase anaerobic RBC (in that order). When operated at high phenol loading rates (0.87-1.56 kg-COD/m3.day), the anaerobic- aerobic RBC process is also the best choice, and then aerobic RBC, anaerobic RBC and two-phase anaerobic RBC. The test results of organic wastewaters indicated that when operated at low organic loading rates (< 4.2 kg-COD/m3.day), the anaerobic- aerobic RBC, aerobic RBC and anaerobic RBC are good choices. When operated at high organic loading rates (4.2-17.33 kg-COD/ m3.day), the anaerobic-aerobic RBC process is also the best choice, and then aerobic RBC, two-phase anaerobic RBC and anaerobic RBC.
