The female started laying eggs after emergence. The preoviposition period of the mated female was 8.4+1.8 days, but that of the unmated ones was 13 days. this suggested that mating could not onlyprovide sperms but also male accessory gland (MAG)which affects the physiological response of the female and promotes egg production. When virgin females were onjectes with 0.025MAG through the intergmental membrane, theybegan to lay eggs 10 days later. The preoviposition period was 10.4+1.8 days, that is shorter than that of the contro; group (14.4+1.8 days). When 1-4 day old males were injected withdifferent concentrations of precocene II and mated with females 7days later, the pre- oviposition period of the females was longer than that of the control group. It is proposed that the MAG of the 1-4 day old males was influenced by JH and, therefore, the injection of precocene II inhibited JH and thus lowered the effect of MAG on the egg production and prolonged the period for female to lay eggs. However, for 5 day old males, 100-2500ug/ulprecocene II was required to delay the preoviposition period. The MAG length of thegroup injected with 100ug/ul precocene II at the first day and dissected at the 3rd day was 1.81+0.18mm,and that with 10-100ug/ul precocene II at the 3rd and dissected at the 4th day was 1.75+0.26mm.Bothare shorter than that of the control group . For those treated after the 3rd days, their accessory gland was normal. therefore, it is suggected that the 3rd day after emergence was probably the critical period for the development of the accessory gland in B. dorsalis(Hendel).
