Summary: | 碩士 === 國立中興大學 === 外國語文學系研究所 === 85 === New criticism claims to be an objective study. It advocates scientific writing
and reading. Depersonalization adn a series fo self surrender are necessary f
orcreation. Confessional poetry, on the contrary, intends to escape from the
domain of obnjectivity. The confessinal poet wants to disclose his personal e
motion in public. What he seeks is a truthful confrontation with his authenti
c being as well as with the world. New Criticism and conmfessional peotry look
like two opposite extremes at first sight; however, the two extremes, in a sen
se, may win some space for reconciliation adn even cooperation. This paper pla
ns to delve into the tangled relation between the two. The first chapter deal
s with the dialogue between the authentic author and the depersonalized author
. The idea of "the implied author" is brought into light as a potential way f
or solving the contradiction. In Chapter Two, I try to clear the definition o
f confessional poetry from the selection of subject matter and the essence of p
oetry. Confessional poetry is elevated from a personal record to ahistorical
symbol. Chapter Three discusses the problems in reading confessional poetry.
An autobiographical reading as a misreading is brought in. A New Critical rea
ding, in fact, is objective from the outset, but subjective at the end. This
kind of reading aims to reach the multiplicity of a text. The end is what both
New Criticism and confessional poets attempt to achieve. However, theend can
be realized by a subjective New Critical reader. From the reading process, a
possibility of reconciliation of the two extremes finally come to light.
