D. Student: Ming-Yi Chi Anthony H. Tu Ph. D. Abstract The paper is to examine the relationship between market structure and performance and the effect of entry barriers in Taiwan''''s banking industry. To measure the relationship between market structure and performance by the level of concentration and market share, and test the change of banking industry structure by Chow test. At the same time, it is to examine whether the entry barriers will affect the operation and market structure of banking industry or not. The econometric method employed in the study is pooling of cross-section and time-series for the period 1986-1994. To use the package of Econometric Views that supports the method of variance components model to rid the bias of heteroscedasticity and autocorrelation. That will achieve the unbiased and consistent results. The empirical result generally supports the "quiet life" hypothesis before new banks enter the market and supports the traditional structure-conduct-performance (SCP) paradigm after new banks enter the market. At the same time, the results verify the minimum total capital and the concentration will cause entry barriers then the amount of branch will be not obvious. Both of the ratios of loans to deposits and the capital-to-assets keep negative relationship to return on assets.
