Traditionally, a Local Area Network (LAN) uses shared bus through hubs to connect different network elements. For large bandwidth applications, such as HDTV, Multimedia and Images, the network usually faces the problems of bandwidth shortage. In order to conquer this problem, a network needs to be upgraded to higher bandwidth which usually means replacing all the network elements as well as network connections which results in very high cost.
The switching hub is an technology developed to economically achieve large bandwidth for each network elements without the burden of replacing all the network elements. As a result, the design of an efficient switching hub is very important.
In order to achieve this purpose, switching technologies is a key of designing switching hub. So we will discuss three switching technologies, including message switching, "cut-through" switching and modified "cut-through" switching, and comparing their performance.
We can get the performance of delay in different switching technologies and the buffer size can be expressed as a function of the desired packet overflow probability. By using this model, a designer can determine the buffer size in a switching hub according to their needs.
