In order to obtain source items, 5,955 articles on literature, history, and philosophy published in 83 Taiwanese journal from 1990 through 1994 were sampled. From the sample, 346 articles that produced 15,261 citations were randomly selected and further analyzed. Among the characteristics analyzed in this study were the forms, languages, places of publication, ages, and subjects of the cited materials. The study also identified the most frequently cited authors, monographic titles, and periodical titles. The analysis of the citations indicated several characteristics of the research materials used within the field of humanities in Taiwan. Monographs (47.20%), rare books (28.90%) and periodicals (15.27%) constituted the most frequently cited types of material. The language of materials used was predominantly Chinese (85.03%), with English took up 10.40% and Japanese 3.81%. Materials published in Taiwan (49.08%) and mainland China (27.55%) were heavily cited. Obsolescence was negligible since 32.37% of the citations were from materials older than 80 years. Subject dispersion was fairly predictable with 95.60% being in literature, history, and philosophy. In addition, the study examined the nature of research in the humanities by analyzing the research findings of American and European scholars. Suggestions were made for libraries in Taiwan to provide more beneficial services to the researchers of the humanities according to both the characteristics of materials used by them and the nature of research in the humanities.
