The work was focused on the spinnability of aromatic polyamide
copolymer, Ultramid(r) T , which usually used for composite
material. The effects of spinning condition and heat drawing
after spinning on the fibre structure were studied. Scanning
electron microscopy and wide angle X-ray diffraction method
were used. The thermal properties and the tensile properties of
the fibres were measured as well. The melting temperature of the
copolymer is about 300℃. However, the decomposition of the
material takes place at 330℃for 30 minutes. The processing
temperature and heating time for the melt spinning is rather
narrow and shortish. A shortening of molten copolymer in the
spinning bath could be the way for the melt spinning in this
case. The copolymer was molten at 330℃, and then spun at the
temperatures of 330℃, 310℃,and 290℃. The as-spun fibres were
slightly yellow and brittle at the spinning temperatures of
330℃and 310℃, and this fibres were not suitable for following
drawing. The as-spun fibres produced at the spinning
temperature of 290℃were drawable. It was drawn at 130℃at low
draw ratios, say 2, 3, 4, and 5. The diameter of the drawn
fibre (×5) is about 100 μm, and the tensile strength is about
3 g / d . The moisture regain of the drawn fibres are in the
range of 1.9∼2.2%. The melting point of the drawn fibre is
about 303℃. The skin-core structure of the tensile fractured
fibres were observed, when the as-spun fibre was drawn at draw
ratio 3. Fibrils were observed in the tensile fractured fibre,
which was 5 times drawing. The X-ray of as-spun fibre
diffraction peaks at 8 °, 23°,and 28°can be seen . After 5
times drawing, except at 8°, 23°, and 28°, new diffraction
peaks are found at 25°, 18°,16°,and 14°. bstract
