However, in a strict manner, oscillators are nonlinear system, the startup of oscillation should be present in the beginning and then the oscillators will reach steady state in the long run. Thus, the startup of oscillation is a very important step. The commonly used method, trial and error, for oscillators startup is not to be universally valid.   In this thesis, we adopt the well-developed stability criterion to determine accurately the area of startup of oscillation in the Smith chart. Meanwhile, a new unified approach to the optimum design of stable microwave oscillators is presented here. This approach is suitable for the design of slightly unstable circuits.   Finally, we illustrate the design of an oscillator with a microwave transistor ATF-13284 using this method.
