However, the ATM network is the optimal solution for resolving this problem nowadays. Therefore, the design of ATM service environment to provide the multimedia communications and enhance the B-ISDN services is one of the main objectives in current computer and communication industries. But, the ATM network is based on cell switching technique quite different to the packet switching of the traditional networks. Thus, the interconnection of these two kinds of networks is difficult. To unimpede in information transmission, the study of interconnection is an important issue. PC-based transparent unit for interconnecting the cell-based networks using ATM technology and frame-based networks, such as LANs, is designed in our TTIT-ATM testbed and reported here. The main essential of designed InterWorking Unit (IWU) is doing its best to achieve a seamless integration by using the address resolution protocol and connection management. The key techniques being developed as well as the configuration and QoS analysis beingundertaken are explored in this article. Moreover, the implementation issue and conformance testing are also discussed in the theme. We believe that the deliverable unit is a very economic and efficient solution for existing LANs which make the evolution to cell- based networks while the IWU is still a high-price product in the network market.
