charcteristics librarians in Taiwan universities use
the Internet. The data collected by the qualitative study.
Of the 331 questionnaires sent in September 1995,
242 usable responses were returned, giving a response rate of
73.11 percent . The data were analyzed with the item
analysis, factor analysis, Chi square test, t-test, ANOVA in
SPSS for Windows. Results of this study showed that
Internet learning experience and demographic variables
except gender and management status were significantly
different between users and nonusers. Librarians were more
positive attitude toward two scales, information technology
and Internet. Most respondents ( 69 percent) had been using
the Internet for more than one year. The most popular tools
used were Telnet, E-mail, WWW. The respondents use
Internet for searching OPAC. To learn about the Internet and
its offerings, respondents indicted that friends and
colleagues were the most helpful. The major barrier for
librarians using Internet was insufficient speed. The lack
of time and mot supporting jobs were commonly mentioned by
the nonusers. What training should be provided for
future, respondents identified how Internet is helpful to
librarians and its potential for libraries. Finally, some
suggestions and future research directions were proposed.
