foreignpolicy. By the implementation of "Eastward Policy," It
de-finitely would result in new interactions between China
andRussia through the engagement, conflict, and compromise
amongpolitical, econmic, and culture sectors. The purpose of
this thesis is, based on the research of Russian
"EastwardPolicy" and Ai Hun Treaty and focused on ensuing
developmentof Sino-Russian border problems leaving behind
NerchinskTreaty, to analyse the following: (1) What is the
relationship between Russian "Eastward Policy" in the
middle of 19th century and its tradi- tional expansion
policy? (2) How was the international situtation and the
circum- stance chin Dunasty was in affecting Russia's
"East- ward Policy?" (3) Whether the purpost of
Russia's intruding into Amur region and its expansion
achievement affected future development of Russian
"Eastward Policy." (4) Using Ai Hun Treaty as a case to
explain the negotia- tion process to settle Sino-Russian
east border dis- pute and to study the effect of this
treaty. (5) Analyse whether the signing of Ai Hun Treaty had
legal effect and its controversy. The methodology of
this thesis is based on historical des- cription. Using
basic concepts of historicalism and pramaticism,and using the
principle of a country's geographical positionaffects its power
and foreign policy approach, and basing on available modern
history materials, to re-examine this historicalproblem. The
First Chapter serves as an introduction. TheSecond Chapter
explains the formation of Russian "Eastward Policy." The Third
Chapter discusses the implementation of Russian "Eastward
Policy" in the middle of 19th century and the controversy
surrounding Sino-Russian east border. TheFourth Chapter deals
with the signing of Ai Hun Treaty. TheFifth Chapter reviews and
analyses Ai Hun Treaty. The SixthChapter concludes this thesis.
